HOW WE INVEST

Few decisions, held long.

Most investment firms are built to produce activity. Activity reassures clients, justifies fees, and gives everyone something to discuss each quarter. We are built to produce something rarer: the restraint to leave a correct decision alone.

The portfolio holds twelve businesses. Some have been with us longer than our youngest partners. Each was studied for years before we bought it, and each is watched with the attention you give things you never intend to sell.

I

Buy as owners, not renters

We underwrite every position as if the market will close for a decade the day after we buy. If that prospect is frightening, the answer was already no.

II

Concentration is honesty

A portfolio of two hundred names is an admission that none of them are truly known. Twelve is the number at which conviction and knowledge still cover every position completely.

III

Stewardship over salesmanship

We publish one letter a year, hold one meeting a year, and answer the telephone the same day. What we do not do is market. The families we serve found us the way you likely did: through someone who knows us.

IV

Our capital sits with yours

Every partner's investable net worth is in the same vehicles, on the same terms, with the same lockups. There is no cleverness we reserve for ourselves.
